Two Announcements and a Confession:

It might not be as provocative as, "Four Weddings and a Funeral" but this title does sum up the last few weeks here at Allen. First, the confession: This issue of e-notes is a little late because we've been playing with new toys from Santa. Those "toys" are the subject of our first announcement, the installation of high-definition video cameras and a broadcast-quality production edit/control suite here at Allen. Octave Hall concert audiences are sure to enjoy the upgrades! The equipment will also enhance e-notes and other Allen publications with high-quality video clips. In fact, we have used the video suite to produce our second announcement, that of a new Allen theatre model. We could go on and on about this exciting instrument but, as you know, a picture is worth a thousand words. And, since video is actually 30 pictures per second, the following clip is worth millions! Enjoy!

Allen Quantum™ Q370 installed in The Petrozavodsk State Academy of Music
Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia, Russia

The Petrozavodsk State Academy of Music is an independent music institute with approximately 100 faculty members and 500 students. The Academy has become a center of excellence for training music professionals, concert activity and musicological research in North Russia. Its more than 4000 graduates work in Russia and in many countries around the world.

This Allen Quantum™ Q370 organ was installed in the newly dedicated and acoustically superior Great Hall of the Petrozavodsk State Academy of Music in Karelia, Russia. The three-manual console was finished to match the stage's floor and shell. In addition to authentic pipe sounds, the instrument provides modern musical sounds through Vista Navigator™.

The organ's primary set of speakers are arranged to create the sense of three organ chamber spaces (Swell, Great-Pedal, and Choir divisions) inside the 405 seat concert hall. There is also a full set of smaller speakers to augment and create a similarly elevated audio image for the organist and orchestra on stage.

St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Reston, Virginia
Custom 4-Manual Quantum 82 stop Organ

When St. Anne's Episcopal Church decided to replace their decades-old Aeolian Skinner pipe organ, the Minister of Music, David Allen, obtained quotes from various pipe organ builders. He also considered adding a digital console to augment the pipes. It was at this point that David first heard the Allen combination pipe-digital instrument at Trinity Episcopal Church in Manassas, Virginia and felt compelled to contact the Allen Organ Company to learn more.

The Allen representative in the Washington D.C. area, Ken Saliba, escorted David and the St. Anne's organ committee to hear both the Trinity Church instrument and an Allen custom organ at Christ Church, Georgetown. After experiencing these demonstrations the committee posed the question; "Do we really need pipes at all?"

Freed from the restrictions of pipes, a custom four-manual Allen digital organ was designed and installed. Now, the entire Church is awash with the glorious sounds of the King of Instruments - without pipes.

David Allen commented, "This new organ makes me so happy. It fills St. Anne's with wonderful music. The innovative placement of the speakers, some sixty eight in all, help the organ provide wonderful support for congregational singing. A colleague of mine described the organ as 'wrapping its arms around the congregation'".

"It has been designed to English cathedral specifications", he continued, "This could only be possible with the use of the current digital technology, given the space limitations of our organ chamber."

"Allen's obvious expertise in the digital field, matched by the quality of their workmanship, has provided St. Anne's with a magnificent instrument that will bring us joy for many years to come", David concluded.
