St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Kapa'au has recently undergone repairs necessitated by an earthquake in 2006. The final piece of the renovation, a new organ, has been realized by the loan of an Allen instrument in advance of purchase. In addition to enhancing worship the instrument has made it possible to offer free concerts for the North Kohala community. St. Augustine's Church was built in 1884 by families who came to the Hawaiian Islands to work in the sugar industry, who settled in North Kohalaon, the northern tip of the Big Island of Hawaii. Aside from some additions to the interior in 1913 it is much the same as it was when it was built. It is surrounded by a small cemetery in which a number of founding members and generations of others who have followed them are buried. The picturesque setting, atop a high hill, attracts many visitors. St. Augustine's Church boasts a multi-cultural congregation that works in harmony to serve the spiritual and everyday needs of their community by preparing daily meals, running a highly-frequented thrift shop, and offering a beautiful place to worship, pray, and sing.
